Description

Past the Durmitor National Park sign, we squelch along the forested track; rich smells of moss, fir and pine lofting in the humid air. Through the small canopy gaps overhead, I can see spring snow draping the 2,000-metre peaks which circle us. Here, amongst the sticky undergrowth, it feels like winter’s mark has long since left.

I pause, looking down the curious natural avenue the old trees have created. They guide us down the arboreal corridor straight towards the mountain eye. 50 metres ahead, the patchwork of leaves and branches give way. Light pours through into a haze of greenery.

Stepping over the last coiled roots, I stand in front of Snake Lake. The earthy shimmer to the water casts a luminous reflection of the grand pine trees which crowd the lakeshore. Frogs and toads rhythmically chirp. Somewhere behind, a woodpecker drums into a new home. I step further ahead, into the direct sunlight and feel its warmth wash away the lingering cold, all apprehensions and doubt quietly dissolving.

I look back to see J perched amongst the old roots, eyes closed, smiling. Soaking it all in.

“I feel like we’ve been waiting for this for a while…” he muttered, half to himself.

This is Snake Lake (Zminje Jezero) in Durmitor National Park, Montenegro. It’s an ancient glacial lake known locally as a mountain eye. Legend has it that, once during a harsh winter, dozens of snakes froze here. Spring snowmelt gradually filled the basin, creating a lake with a reflection of the snakes’ skin.
