It’s a long, early summer evening, and I watch as Sarah pushes the last of the tent pegs into the moist mud. We’ve cycled here after work and have timed it perfectly to watch nature’s grand finale. The apricot backdrop continually deepens, becoming more vibrant, stopping us both in our tracks.
We’re camping atop Binsey, the northernmost and shortest of the Wainwright peaks in the Lake District. But even at 447m, you can see perfectly across the Solway Straight and into Scotland.
With busy work schedules, trips to Scotland were never as regular as we wanted them to be. But each time we crossed the border, I cherished how things changed. Different laws, curious customs, new landscapes and wildlife. The border was a mere 15 miles away, but it offered a land of grand adventure and maiden experiences.
On a clear day, you could see Scotland from most of the Northern Fells. Together, we would cycle, run, or hike up and gaze across, in awe, marvelling at the diversity of this world. With Scotland so close but with so much exciting change, what might life be like in Shetland? Or further to Iceland? Or across the continent to the Caucasus?
