Description

Crossing the border from Turkey, we arrived at Georgia’s Black Sea Coastline in furious rain. Heads down, water and sweat dripped from my helmet to my face, and as I looked up to wipe it away, I saw towering buildings scratching at the sky on the horizon.

A fast city quickly came to greet us, awash with speeding cars that soaked us with gritty water and ragged dogs which liked the look of our calves. Arriving in Batumi was a moment of trepidation – unsure of a new country, in a bewildered state of mud and rain, shying away from the buzz of city life, its large neon signs shining through the downpour.

Whilst we have always known our journey would take us to India, there have been few definite waypoints along the way. That is, besides Georgia. It had become incredibly significant on our map. As we rode across Europe, at times we’d lose sight of where we were going. At these moments, we’d remind each other, ‘we’re going east, towards Georgia’.

After a year and a half of constant movement, reaching our destination and knowing that movement was stopping… it felt baffling. This was roughly the halfway point to India. A resting spot. But also our opportunity to tell of the stories this journey had brought us.

Slowly, the rain dissipated, making way for a burnt apricot sun to slowly poke through the clouds. Perched on the pebble beach alongside the city’s colony of stray dogs, watching the day come to a close with the auburn sky aflame. We watched the sun gradually dip below the horizon, a fishing boat almost chasing it, with seabirds hunting in its wake.

Slowly, the trepidation faded. This was just where we needed to be.
